Chapter 24

The sTORM

When Darcus and the others reached the first ledge, they all sat down, panting loudly. Darcus’s muscles burned from the arduous climb and he laid his body down to recuperate. He slowed his rapid breathing and looked up the side of the tower with dismay. They still had a lot more to climb.

Darcus rolled to his side. Naíuna was tending to Brogan’s wounds. He had another nasty flesh wound where the gryphon had clawed him. Naíuna used her va’harma to stitch him up. When she was done, Brogan leaned his head against the tower. The ledge was only wide enough for them to walk, so Brogan’s legs hung over the ledge.

Everyone took a quick drink of water. Unfortunately, they had no food. Darcus expanded his perception to gauge their progress and frowned. They had only climbed a third of the way. This was the first of three ledges and while he was thankful there were ledges, he wished that they still had the Tyrkan to fly them to the top.

They rested for a while before they decided to climb again. Darcus fingered the smooth wall, but he could not find the footholds that he had grown accustomed to. Darcus looked to Aralia and Neldae for direction.

“I don’t see any either, we’ll have to walk around the ledge until we find more,” Aralia admitted.

The haggard group walked the ledge for nearly an hour until they found the next series of footholds, which happened to be on the opposite side of the structure.

Darcus directed each of them to tether to one another with the rope Naíuna carried. If someone slipped, at least they wouldn’t fall to their death. Then again, if Brogan fell, he’d likely pull all of them down with him.

They silently climbed the steep walls into the moonlit, foggy sky. They stopped at the next ledge and rested a bit before they continued. Again, they had to walk the ledge for nearly an hour until they found the next set of footholds.

Darcus kept his perception expanded as they climbed, but each time he tried to examine what was at the top of the tower, his perception was blocked. It was like there was an invisible ward that prevented him from seeing the Dark Sorcerer’s kingdom with his mind. He wondered what else the ward was capable of, but he kept his concerns to himself. There is only one way to find out.

The sound of distant thunder captured all their attentions. A powerful breeze stirred the fog around them and Darcus had to stop climbing so that he did not lose his hold. He looked down at the others who all mirrored his concern. An unusual, but familiar power resonated within the storm. Darcus signaled for everyone to climb faster.

A web of lightning flashed across the dark sky, revealing billowing storm clouds that approached them. The storm moved with unnatural speed as it tracked across the sky.

“We will be swept to our deaths when it starts to rain,” Naíuna yelled above the wind.
